Do you think that you’re in some way empowering homosexuality,
When you make every platonic male relationship gay? This fanshipping thing is getting offensive, I mean people are doing it with the brothers in Supernatural. Saw one the other day that was Luke and Han. Why? Why do they need to be gay? Is homosexuality just a cuter version of friendship, and are you simply belittling homosexual relationships to a kawaii thing where boys cuddle? Because that’s what it seems like.
Guys have this weird thing where they want to fuck lesbians, and girls on Tumblr have this weird thing where they want the two hot guys that they’re attracted to to cuddle and kiss in secret because they think it would be adorable. So far as respecting same sex relationships, both of these approaches are somewhat demeaning. But hey, anything whatsoever is better that homophobia so as long as you’re flying the rainbow flag you can do what you want, right? Right.
I agree that a lot of slash fandom involves a specific, one-dimensional and idealized picture of homosexuality. But a lot of straight women are drawn to slash because it allows them access to a sexuality that doesn’t have the standard patriarchal power dynamic baggage that m/f is prone to by virtue of its heterosexuality. You can’t dismiss it as a whole because some members of fandom don’t have a nuanced understanding of gay sexuality and culture. Also, slash fandom as a phenomenon existed way, way before Tumblr — it was first popularized in the late ’60s with the original Star Trek fandom.
I can understand the backlash against gifs on Tumblr, though, because can a nuanced picture of anything be presented in gif form?
