and im gonna write more about this later
zuky:
but at this point i am convinced: Occupy Wall Street is not a revolutionary movement. SlutWalk is not a revolutionary movement. There might be revolutionary elements, but fundamentally, these movements are about retaining and returning to unchallenged white supremacy. In as much as the current power structure makes them uncomfortable, they want to change it so they can get back comfortable. but that’s about it.
Im gonna ask..why haven’t the minorities started protesting then?
We have been, it only took white people 519 years to notice.
Oh wait, do you mean why didn’t we drop our own work and our own needs and our own experiences to join white people’s agenda? Wonder why.
Anyone who feels the need to ask (as though it’s somehow bold of them) about their own ignorant perception of the behavior of “the minorities” is not fit to contribute much value to any movement, white or not. Truth is, Occupy Wall Street has done some things quite well in order to gain as much momentum as it has. But you know the most important thing they’ve done to garner mainstream credibility and visibility? Be white and middle class. That’s why this matters so much, whereas all the work we’ve done for social justice on the daily is shrugworthy to them. As readnfight says, communities of color have been organizing, protesting, and pursuing economic and political justice and equality for decades and centuries, and white people look the other way and can’t be bothered to care; then white people lose enough jobs to get pissed off and start protesting, then have the gall to challenge us with questions like “Why haven’t the minorities been protesting?”
